“Medical Approaches for Optimal Age Management” proved to be a resounding success as a packed ballroom listened intently to the latest research on aging presented by Angeli Akey, MD. For the benefit of those who were marked absent, the following is a brief summary of Monica doing her best to do Dr. Akey’s presentation justice.

Four key areas vital to vitality and good health: 1. Nutrition, 2. Exercise, 3. Hormone balance and 4. Stress management. ‘Looking good’ is but a mere side affect/benefit of good health so let’s get after it…
We’ll start with nutrition and the war on belly fat. Turns out that cute spare tire/muffin top around your waist is not so cute anymore. Liposuction or not, it’s the actual visceral fat around the organs that is very inflammatory and inflammation is not your friend. Inflammation leads to heart disease and who needs friends like that! Choose your friends wisely. Dump the fat.
Diet is crucial because we are now learning that ‘insulin resistance’ leads to an increase in belly fat. Insulin resistance develops when constant high levels of circulating blood sugar leads to the insulin becoming resistant or insensitive to doing its job-i.e. lowering the blood sugar. If you can reduce insulin resistance then you can reduce belly fat. The proven way to reduce insulin resistance is to eat a low glycemic index diet and exercise regularly. Note how I put the diet first. You won’t starve to death on a low glycemic plan. Doc knows you need your ‘daily bread’ but not the kind that has the same glycemic index of table sugar (100).
And how do you know if you have too much or too little belly fat? You find Monica or a good tape measure and you perform a ‘medical waist measurement’ procedure. The findings should be <35” for women and <40” for men. Asians and Hispanics should be 2” less.
And btw, you have Type 2 diabetes if your blood sugar is >126 measured twice. If you know or suspect your sugar is high, this is not something that can wait till after football season.
The discussion on hormones was really interesting and enlightening. Hormone levels decrease with age and play a vital role in weight management. Dr. Akey finds that the body weight gets better as we balance the hormones. We can only blame our genes for about 30% of our troubles. It’s been said that our genes may steer us toward the cliff but it’s our lifestyle that will put us over the cliff edge! If you’re eating wisely and exercising regularly but can’t lose the paunch, seriously look into having your hormone levels checked.
