Recent press penned by TV Drs. Oz & Roizen cite a Swedish study which demonstrates that exercise activates genes that promote fat-burning, prevent disease and disability – and boost energy and brain power! It’s called gene expression. It is our ‘decision’ to ‘turn them on, or keep them off.’ “Exercise also activates up to 100 genes that guard against cancer,” say the good doctors, “and squelches 75 cancer-promoting genes.” Other bene’s include the boosting of a neat newly discovered hormone called irisin. This little goodie turns ‘bad-fat’(white) into to ‘good fat’ (brown) which actually helps protect against diabetes and obesity. All-in-all, by combining exercise with proper diet can turn on 500 healthy genes. Again, it’s all up to you!

Namaste!
The International Health and Racquet Sports Association published its latest report ending 9.2011: * 16% of all Americans, 16 years an older, are now members of health clubs throughout the country * The top reasons cited for joining a club include: to feel better about myself(59%); to stay healthy(56%); to look better (49%); to lose weight(48%); to maintain strength (45%).
The good news is that attrition (how many peple drop out of health clubs after joining) has actually decreaed from 40% to 30%. That said, the puzzling question is ‘why?’ Theories abound as to the rationalization for healthy living. Always the challenge, our new innovation conceived through Fitness Concierge Services is poised to addressed the ‘personal nature’ of each person’s struggles and assist them in ‘staying the course.’
Stay tuned as we begin to bgeta the concept thoughout the fitness-world and empower thousands to keep on, keepin’ on!
Planning is purposeful but an idea not acted upon, evaporates as time lingers. If, like so many others, you have decided that ‘this is it’…this is THE year that my lifestyle changes, then (to borrow from our friends at Nike) – JUST DO IT! The antecedent to every action is a thought. But, once the thought is conceived, the more time that passes, the less likely is that you will execute its content. In the realm of health promotion (which, in essence, is what we are doing…) your ‘stage of change’ will have a direct bearing on your degree of success in your endeavor. Chances are if you are reading this, you are beyond ‘pre-contemplation’ and ‘contemplation’ and either in ‘action’ or (the ever troubling) ‘maintenance’ phase. It’s the latter that folks struggle the most. Here they have been engaged in the ‘change’ over a period of time but begin to wane for various reasons. It is during this time that the determination must be re-doubled. We are here to encourage, assist and help you plan. Half the battle is won when you merely ‘show up.’ If your health isn’t a priority, it should be, but we can’t do it for you. See you at the club!
As reprinted from an email received from Dr. Frederick Hatfield, President of the International Sports Science Association:
Folks, This very important knowledge to have especially as we spend time with family over the holidays
STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall – she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ….she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. … They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Jane’s husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital – (at 6:00 pm Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don’t die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this.
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke…totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE:
Thank God for the sense to remember the ’3′ steps, STR. Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently, i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. New Sign of a Stroke ——– Stick out Your Tongue!
We want to see you in the New Year…so please take care of yourselves!
