Recent press penned by TV Drs. Oz & Roizen cite a Swedish study which demonstrates that exercise activates genes that promote fat-burning, prevent disease and disability – and boost energy and brain power! It’s called gene expression. It is our ‘decision’ to ‘turn them on, or keep them off.’ “Exercise also activates up to 100 genes that guard against cancer,” say the good doctors, “and squelches 75 cancer-promoting genes.” Other bene’s include the boosting of a neat newly discovered hormone called irisin. This little goodie turns ‘bad-fat’(white) into to ‘good fat’ (brown) which actually helps protect against diabetes and obesity. All-in-all, by combining exercise with proper diet can turn on 500 healthy genes. Again, it’s all up to you!

The International Health and Racquet Sports Association published its latest report ending 9.2011: * 16% of all Americans, 16 years an older, are now members of health clubs throughout the country * The top reasons cited for joining a club include: to feel better about myself(59%); to stay healthy(56%); to look better (49%); to lose weight(48%); to maintain strength (45%).

The good news is that attrition (how many peple drop out of health clubs after joining) has actually decreaed from 40% to 30%. That said, the puzzling question is ‘why?’ Theories abound as to the rationalization for healthy living. Always the challenge, our new innovation conceived through Fitness Concierge Services is poised to addressed the ‘personal nature’ of each person’s struggles and assist them in ‘staying the course.’

Stay tuned as we begin to bgeta the concept thoughout the fitness-world and empower thousands to keep on, keepin’ on!

We have been blessed to be involved in the formation of a new wellness initiative known as ‘Fitness Concierge Services’. This organization’s mission statement is simple: Motivation Through Communication. We have developed unique, proprietary communication protocols specifically designed to encourage poeple to engage in consistent exercise programming. This initiative will service health clubs, large employers, body monitoring device manufacturers as well as health insurance companies. The prospects are enormous as the general public struggles with the rising cost of health care and, as well all know, regular exercise is a critical component to the solution!

As such, we are seeking a small cadre of fitness afficionadoes who may be interested in participating in the enterprise from an investment standpoint. If this sounds like something you’d care to get involved with, please contact Monica by emailing her at: monicaffl@bellsouth.net.

We will be having an investor opportunity meeting to be announced shortly which will provide program details and financial expectations.

Planning is purposeful but an idea not acted upon, evaporates as time lingers. If, like so many others, you have decided that ‘this is it’…this is THE year that my lifestyle changes, then (to borrow from our friends at Nike) – JUST DO IT! The antecedent to every action is a thought. But, once the thought is conceived, the more time that passes, the less likely is that you will execute its content. In the realm of health promotion (which, in essence, is what we are doing…) your ‘stage of change’ will have a direct bearing on your degree of success in your endeavor. Chances are if you are reading this, you are beyond ‘pre-contemplation’ and ‘contemplation’ and either in ‘action’ or (the ever troubling) ‘maintenance’ phase. It’s the latter that folks struggle the most. Here they have been engaged in the ‘change’ over a period of time but begin to wane for various reasons. It is during this time that the determination must be re-doubled. We are here to encourage, assist and help you plan. Half the battle is won when you merely ‘show up.’ If your health isn’t a priority, it should be, but we can’t do it for you. See you at the club!

As reprinted from an email received from Dr. Frederick Hatfield, President of the International Sports Science Association:

Folks, This very important knowledge to have especially as we spend time with family over the holidays

STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall – she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ….she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. … They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Jane’s husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital – (at 6:00 pm Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don’t die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke…totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE:

Thank God for the sense to remember the ’3′ steps, STR. Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S * Ask the individual to SMILE.

T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently, i.e. It is sunny out today.)

R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. New Sign of a Stroke ——– Stick out Your Tongue!

We want to see you in the New Year…so please take care of yourselves!

Who loves ya’???

Yes, yes, YES! The Holidays are upon us and the propensity for prolific piling on of the pounds lays squarely in our sights! What to do? Hmmm…what did you do last year…and the year before…and so on? Will history repeat itself? Are we doomed to repeat it? Some ‘save up’ just so they can splurge and enjoy. Nothing wrong there, quite frankly, IF…in fact, you have been ‘saving up’ and can mount a significant ‘counter-attack’ then, by all means, enjoy! If not, and history proves your inability (or shall we say ‘unwillingness’) to make the necessary adjustments, then I suggest you re-think that last helping of grandma’s pumpkin pie! Be wise, be mindful and stay healthy!

Unbelievable! The last quarter of 2011…where did the first three go? Well, God put eyes in the front of our heads for a reason, right?: to look forward, not behind! So, in spite of what perhaps did not occur in the first part of the year, let’s focus on what we have left and make the very, VERY best of it! As the holidays begin to appear, let’s prepare for the ‘battle of the bulge,’ shall we? Let’s think of eating ‘mindfully,’ for a change. How does one engage in such a practice? First, you focus on the function. Dr. Jan Bays in her blog ‘Mindful Eating’ states, “the problem is not the food, …the fat…the stomach…but the mind.” She goes on to say, “mindfulness is awareness without criticism or judgement.’ So, think about what your doing…how much you are trying to consume…and slow down to fully enjoy the experience.

If you fail…then come on down! We are here to take the edge (rounded) off and stabilize the vessel! Work out…work smart…and enjoy!
